What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, or pes planus, is a common condition in which the arches of the feet are low or absent. Many babies are born with flat feet, and typically, arches develop as the child grows. However, in some children, the arch does not fully form, leading to flat feet that can sometimes cause discomfort or pain.

Parents may first notice flat feet when they see their child’s ankles turning inward or hear complaints of “weak ankles.” While flat feet in young children usually do not cause significant problems, persistent flat feet that result in foot pain or difficulty walking may require intervention.

How Are Flat Feet Treated?

Treatment is generally considered if flat feet cause pain or functional issues. Options may include:

Arch Supports

Custom or over-the-counter arch supports can be inserted into the child’s shoes to provide additional support and alleviate pain.

Footwear Recommendations

Properly fitting shoes with good arch support can help manage symptoms.

Exercises and Stretching

Specific exercises and stretches may be recommended to strengthen the muscles and improve foot alignment.
