Sever’s Disease is a common cause of heel pain in children, particularly between the ages of 8 and 15. It results from inflammation of the growth plate in the heel bone (calcaneus), where the Achilles tendon attaches. This condition is often seen during periods of rapid growth, when a child's bones may grow faster than their muscles and tendons, leading to strain.
Children who participate in sports such as soccer, football, or baseball, particularly those wearing cleats, are at higher risk. The repetitive stress and pressure on the heel can exacerbate the problem. Additionally, conditions like Achilles tendonitis, which causes inflammation of the tendon at the back of the heel, can also contribute to increased heel pain. Symptoms of Sever’s Disease:
Pain that improves with rest and worsens with activity
Tenderness at the back or bottom of the heel
Swelling or redness around the heel
Pain that improves with rest and worsens with activity
If your child experiences persistent heel pain, a visit to a podiatrist is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. Treatment options may include:
Special shoe inserts to correct foot function and reduce stress on the heel.
To alleviate tension in the Achilles tendon and calf muscles.
To reduce pain and inflammation.
Avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain.
In extreme cases, a below-the-knee walking cast may be recommended to immobilize the heel and aid in healing.
