What Are Warts?

Warts are small, rough skin growths that often resemble a cauliflower. They are caused by a strain of the human papillomavirus (HPV) that enters the body through microscopic openings in the skin. In response to the virus, the body attempts to create a protective callus over the affected area. Warts can spread through direct contact with an infected person or indirectly via surfaces touched by someone with the virus. Individuals with compromised immune systems, including children, are more susceptible to warts compared to those with healthy immune systems. Characteristics of Warts:

Appearance

Rough texture, often resembling cauliflower.

Black Dots

These are small blood vessels within the wart, not a sign of cancer.

Benign Nature

Despite common misconceptions, warts are non-cancerous.

What Are Plantar Warts?

Plantar warts, or verrucas, occur on the soles of the feet. Due to the pressure from body weight, they have a flattened appearance and can be extremely painful. The discomfort is often exacerbated by walking or standing, particularly if the wart is left untreated for an extended period. The pain from plantar warts can become nearly intolerable.

How Are Warts Treated?

In many cases, warts may resolve on their own as the immune system fights off the virus. However, if you have been dealing with a wart for a prolonged period or if it is causing significant discomfort, it is advisable to seek medical attention from a podiatrist. At Ryan Foot and Ankle Clinic, we offer effective treatments for warts, tailored to each patient’s needs. Treatment Options:

Office Treatments

Most treatments are performed in our office and are generally painless.

Medical Evaluation

Your podiatrist will assess the wart and symptoms to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
